Generation Patient Applauds White House Action to Curb Misleading Pharmaceutical Advertising on Social Media
Generation Patient welcomes today’s White House announcement of increased oversight and enforcement against deceptive direct-to-consumer (DTC) pharmaceutical advertising on social media platforms.
Over the past several years, patients have been inundated with pharmaceutical ads across Instagram, TikTok, and other platforms, where companies often deploy paid influencers to promote medications without transparent disclosure of financial relationships or critical safety information. Regulatory oversight has not caught up to emerging platforms. In addition, some pharmaceutical manufacturers have established affiliated telehealth companies designed to steer patients toward their own products, raising profound concerns about conflicts of interest and patient harm.
Young adults are disproportionately impacted by these practices as the heaviest users of social media among adult age groups.
“For far too long, pharmaceutical manufacturers have infiltrated the influencers we follow and trust to push medications onto our young adult patient community, often without disclosing risks or safety information. We hope today’s announcement leads to meaningful enforcement and accountability for these deceptive practices.” - Alexander Naum, JD, Policy Manager, Generation Patient
“Our community has seen an alarming rise in social media pharma ads that funnel patients to sham telehealth companies created by manufacturers, with providers financially incentivized to prescribe medications. This announcement is a step in the right direction toward ensuring patients receive fair, balanced, and accurate information about prescription drugs.” - Sneha Dave, Executive Director, Generation Patient
Generation Patient has long championed stronger oversight of pharmaceutical and telehealth advertising, including advancing the Protecting Patients from Deceptive Drug Ads Act. As this announcement moves toward implementation, Generation Patient will continue working with federal agencies and policymakers to ensure robust safeguards are put in place for young adult patients navigating their healthcare decisions.
