Generation Patient (GP) is at a defining moment of organizational growth and leadership transition. Building on its nationally recognized work advancing young adult-driven health policy, peer support, and independent patient leadership, GP is hiring a Policy Director to carry the organization into its next phase. This role offers a unique opportunity to lead a respected policy program at the forefront of young adult patient-led health reform.

The Policy Director will expand upon Generation Patient’s existing policy foundation, rooted in equity, transparency, and independence from private healthcare industry influence, to strengthen reforms that center young adult patients in driving healthcare reform. As GP continues to advance national movements around clinical trials, patent reform, prescription drug and medical device access, and emerging regulatory issues such as AI in healthcare, this position will translate patient perspectives into policy and agency wins that improve care and representation for young adults with chronic and rare conditions.

Working closely with the Executive Director and policy manager, the Policy Director will guide strategic advocacy priorities, cultivate mission-aligned funders and coalitions, and represent Generation Patient as a key voice for young adult patient autonomy in national forums. This position requires both vision and execution: a leader capable of building on GP’s policy achievements while creatively positioning the organization for long-term sustainability and impact.

We seek a creative, self-initiating policy strategist deeply committed to transparency, collaboration, and patient-led systems change. The ideal candidate brings a strong background in health policy and coalition leadership, a demonstrated ability to navigate complex political and advocacy landscapes, and a clear passion for advancing equity through lived experience. The Policy Director will play a central role in shaping Generation Patient’s future and the future of young adult patient-led policy nationwide.

Key Responsibilities

Policy Strategy & Advocacy (40%)

  • Lead Generation Patient’s policy agenda across clinical trials, pharmaceutical reform, and future priorities such as AI and digital health tools.

  • Identify systemic barriers faced by young adults with chronic and rare conditions and transform those insights into policy proposals and reforms.

  • Represent GP in legislative briefings, regulatory meetings, media engagements, and national policy discussions.

  • Develop policy briefs, comment letters, white papers, and strategic communications that center young adult patient perspectives.

Coalition Building & Partnerships (25%)

  • Build and sustain relationships with Congressional offices, federal agencies, and key advocacy partners.

  • Strengthen GP’s leadership in cross-disease and cross-sector coalitions focused on access, affordability, and equity.

  • Collaborate with peer patient-led organizations, legal experts, and researchers to amplify patient-centered priorities.

Funder Relations & Program Development (15%)

  • Cultivate and steward relationships with mission-aligned funders advancing young adult health equity.

  • Partner with GP’s Executive Director and operations team to align grants with policy impact goals and ensure transparent reporting.

  • Support the development of new policy initiatives and funding opportunities.

Team Leadership & Organizational Strategy (20%)

  • Supervise and mentor the policy manager, fostering a collaborative and empowering environment.

  • Contribute to GP’s strategic planning and potential expansion into new advocacy structures such as a 501(c)(4).

  • Help guide the organization through its next leadership phase, ensuring alignment with GP’s values of transparency, patient independence, and collective advocacy.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 5-10 years of experience in health policy, advocacy, or coalition leadership

  • 2+ years of experience supervising staff or managing teams

  • Demonstrated ability to translate lived experience into actionable policy solutions

  • Proven track record representing organizations in external advocacy settings

  • Strong analytical, writing, communication, and relationship-management skills
