This forum will focus on the intricacies of drug pricing, particularly with a focus on state policy. We will be discussing important terms and legislation pertaining to drug pricing as well as why we as an organization are passionate about getting involved in this field. This forum will help to educate our young adult demographic on all of the factors that go into drug pricing and the prevalent need for transparency in this territory. With the collaboration of Hemi Tewarson, executive director of the National Academy for State Health Policy, and Andrew York, executive director of the Maryland Prescription Drug Affordability Board we hope to tackle some of the complicated concepts and start a larger dialogue, regarding the current landscape of health policy.

No prior information or education about the pharmaceutical industry or drug pricing is needed for this forum! We will cover topics including:

  • The difference and overlap between federal and state policy

  • Main players in drug pricing and how a drug gets priced

  • “Research and Development” and what this really means

  • A conversation about three key terms, the Prescription Drug Affordability Board, Unsupported Price Increase, International Price Index

  • The increasing power states have to hold pharmaceutical companies accountable

  • How to get involved in state-based drug pricing advocacy (a preview of forum three)

You will leave this forum one step closer to knowing more about the general landscape of drug pricing and the role of states in the movement to lower drug prices.
